There are approximately 440,000 students in Nepal and they are studying various courses throughout the country. Studying abroad has become increasingly popular among Nepalese students in recent years. For better career opportunities, Quality education, and job/earning while studying students choose abroad study. Because the government lacks a proper mechanism to maintain records of students traveling abroad, the country does not possess accurate data regarding such students. However, it is possible to estimate the number of students going abroad by examining the records of permits issued for No Objection Certificate (NOCs). There is a considerable number of students who never came back to Nepal or drop out of college during their course.

Nepalese students need a No Objection certificate (NOC), which is provided by the Ministry of  Education, in order to study abroad. The NOC Nepal is approval and  evidence that the students have met all the requirements and received authorisation from the appropriate authorities to pursue an international education. Every year, hundreds of students go abroad for higher education after passing Grade 12. From  July 2022 to March 2023, 79,309 individuals received foreign study permits, according to Basu Dev Wasti, Director of the Foreign Study permit Branch at the Ministry of Education,Science and Technology.

In the fiscal year 2021-22, 114,000 students acquired NOC permits to study abroad.  The number has already reached 82,000 in the nine months of fiscal year 2022-23 which runs from July 2022 to July 2023.  There are popular destinations for Nepalese students for Abroad-study like: Australia, United Kingdom, Canada, United States, and New Zealand.  According to Government records, Australia has become the top choice for Nepali Students in recent years. After Australia, Japan is the second-best destination for Nepali students in higher education. A total of 8,523 crossed Nepal’s border with government permission for higher education in Japan. According to last year's data thousands of students who travel to Australia are enrolled in vocational and training courses. Over 60 percent of the 121,000 students who acquired NOCs in 2022 were Australia-bound. Nepalese spent as much as Rs.67.70 billion on education abroad in the last fiscal year alone.

-For Australia - 33,991 NOCs were issued; however, 8,452 NOCs were canceled.

-For Canada 21,544 NOCs being issued.

-21,658 to study in Japan.

-10,527 to study in the UK.

-3,046 to study in Korea.

-2,389 to study in UAE.

-The ministry states NOCs were issued to go study in 111 countries.
